Marathon, Florida Keys: Area Guide

Marathon sits in the middle of the Florida Keys, about an hour from Key West and two hours from Miami. Our homes are on the bay side of the island with private docks, so you can be on the water minutes after you wake up.

Getting here

Drive the Overseas Highway (US-1) from Miami, about 110 miles, or fly into Florida Keys Marathon Airport (MTH), a few minutes from the house. Key West International Airport is about 50 miles south.

On the water

Both of our homes have a private dock and room to park a boat trailer, and a public boat ramp is a few blocks away. Kayaks and paddleboards are included, and the lagoon and canals are calm enough for beginners. Expect manatees, sea turtles, tarpon and pelicans right off the dock.

Florida spiny lobster season runs from August 6 to March 31, with the two-day sport season at the end of July. Marathon is one of the most popular places in the Keys to base a lobster trip.

Beaches and things to do

  • Sombrero Beach: a free, sandy public beach about ten minutes from the house.
  • Seven Mile Bridge: walk or bike the old bridge out to Pigeon Key from the west end of Marathon.
  • Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters: touch tanks and snorkel-with-the-fish encounters a short drive away.
  • The Turtle Hospital: guided tours of the sea turtle rescue center in Marathon.
  • Dolphin Research Center: on Grassy Key, about 15 minutes north.
  • Crane Point Hammock: nature trails and a museum in the middle of town.
  • Day trips: Key West and Bahia Honda State Park are both under an hour away.

Eating and shopping

Marathon has waterfront restaurants, seafood markets and a Publix supermarket within a short drive of the house. Guests have recommended Castaway for local seafood.

Good to know

  • Homes in the Keys are elevated, so expect a flight of stairs up to the main living level.
  • Peak season runs December through April. Lobster season in August and the summer months are also busy, so book early.
  • Pets are welcome at our homes. Add them to your booking so we can prepare for them.
